Bridge Terminal Transport City Driver Experience

Working on the city, or local, board consists of hauling loads that originate and final in the Atlanta metro area. This is in contrast to the Over the Road board for loads that go to or come from a port city. BTT's local loads fall into one of two categories, those involving a rail road and those that don't.

The loads that don't involve a rail road consist of either starting or completing a run for a road driver. Such as "Take an empty Maersk container from the BTT terminal to a customer in Birmingham AL for loading. Bring the load back to the BTT Atlanta terminal for a road driver to deliver to the Wando terminal in Mt. Pleasant SC.

The loads that involve the rail road are similar in that our portion of the run originates and finals in the Metro area. This time however, the train acts as the road driver carrying the export or import to or from the various port cities.

Lately I've been taking advantage of the Tanker endorsement on my CDL. BTT has a new contract to move containers of liquid from the metro area to a port city. So far I have enjoyed the challenge of learning the safest and most efficient ways to haul up to 43,000 pounds of liquid in a 20 foot tank. The biggest difference as a driver is being aware of the momentum surges as all that liquid sloshes forward, then backwards, then forwards etc. My third grader says "Slow and steady wins the race". I haul the empty tanks to the customer for loading then bring them back to BTT Atlanta for a road driver.

On the scale for my empty weight. My truck just fits, notice the yellow line near the back tires.

Here I am setting up for the blind side backing move into the loading bay area. (For those of you that don't know, blind side backing involves backing up to the right. Unless you have a power mirror on the right side the mirrors are pretty much useless. Time for the old GOAL method, Get Out And Look. Slow and steady wins the race.) There are four "docks" in this area. There is a tanker dropped in the back left corner. I have plenty of room today. It's much more of a challenge when there are trucks parked in the front docks on both sides and I have to load in the back. Yikes.
