My
first biker build off began today. Watch for the next 30 days as I learn
how to and how not to build a mini chopper. We have been collecting
parts for the last month. Now it's time to get this show on the road. My
challenges are many, no time, no space, limited experience, make shift
tools. The reward that comes from looking at the completed project and
saying, "I built it myself, now don't scratch the paint on the test
drive son" will drive me past any challenge.
TIME
With two restorations in the works and a third on the way, Cub Scouts, Boy
Scouts, Teaching Sunday School, and loading tankers in my big truck time
is tight. I've been working late, early and in between here and there to
plan, find and order parts for the mini chopper.
SPACE
The shop is full with four cars. Two of those are disassembled,
taking up more space.
LIMITED
EXPERIENCE / MAKE SHIFT TOOLS I have plenty of experience building,
designing, fabricating, painting. What I haven't done is build a tube
frame before. When Laurie and I got married I bugged her for years to get
me a tube bender. I always wanted to build a tube frame for
something. Finally Santa Clause brought me a "pipe bender" one
year. It was close, I was happy. I haven't ever used it.
THE
REWARDS Is there anything hotter than choppers right now? No.
"American Chopper" on the Discovery Channel has become the only
TV show I make time to watch. When Zack said he wanted a chopper and he
wanted to help build it the decision was easy.
"The
pressure is on, the rewards are great. Can Bible Belt Mini Choppers design
and build a mini chopper in 30 days? Will Dan and Zack have some quality
time on this project or will it end up in "time out" and TV
restriction? Stay tuned and see!" |
